"Departure": Great Blue Heron

“Departure”, features a Great Blue Heron taking off against a river background. I wanted to capture the different worlds this bird is dwells in; sky and water/land. Two swirls of opposing currents are near each other, one in the sky over the head, and one in the landscape in the trees below the neck. Between these oppositional currents is the Heron, surfing the currents.

I find these birds not only beautiful but so fascinating because they spend so much of their time in water, yet they are also birds of flight, and roost up in trees. They are truly birds of two different worlds. You can see more of my inspiration during the making of this painting in a video here.
